JavaherDeh

I feel like I am one of those 18th century -or when was that- illustrators, who had to draw far away countries and wild animals they had never seen themselves. Would the people from JavaherDeh recognize their village? I try to give the NRC readers a halfway informative image of all these far away places, but whether I am giving them the right impression? All I can do is my best.

Medusa

Somehow, when my mind starts to wander, and I spend my days idly doodling, I somehow always end up drawing pretty girls or monsters... or an amalgam of the two subjects...
Medusa the Gorgon, from Greek mythology, of old has held a special place in my imagination. Has something to do with that hair...

Play Clockwiser online!

In 1994 the Clockwiser puzzle game was released internationally for the Commodore Amiga computers, the CD32 console, MS-DOS and MS-Windows 3.1.

Clockwiser was a production of the Dutch developers Reinier van Vliet (programmer), me (graphics), Peter Schaap (programmer) and Ramon Braumuller (audio).

Peter Schaap and I have now rereleased Clockwiser online as a free retro game, with the addition of new graphics and new functionality. You're invited for a visit to Playclockwiser.com for an impression.

Best regards,

Metin

Diepensee

I am especially proud of my research. I could hardly find any pictures of this German village, until I thought of Youtube.
In 1979 I was in my second year of art school, and we had to welcome the new first year students. We put a record player in the lobby, and played Nina Hagen full blast.

summer series

I am illustrating a series of 20 articles in the NRC economics section. The articles are written by twenty different foreign correspondents. It is very interesting and entertaining to email with all these guys (one woman...).These two are the first ones, China and Poland. This Friday it's Canada. The articles are really good reads btw.

Orange feeling

Cartoon for the Dutch Nu.nl news website, about the Dutch public transport company Qbuzz. A spokesman of the company had mentioned that they wanted to express the 'Orange feeling' (related to the Dutch royal family and involving patriotism).

Although the cartoon's meaning is only fully understandable for Dutch viewers I thought to post it here because I am pleased with the 3D image.

Gids 22

Me and Eliane share the same client. I just did this editorial piece for the VPRO Gids #22, illustrating an article on a new Discovery Channel show entitled 'Dirty Jobs' about people with ...dirty jobs.

Gids 21

I didn't receive a VPRO-Gids myself yet, but somebody sent me a picture, so it's out there all right. I'll put a larger image in my portfolio later today.

Dangerous cartoonist inactivated

A statement against an almost totalitarian police action in the Netherlands, involving a police raid, house-search, seizure and imprisonment of a Dutch cartoonist.

Although a cartoonist may create questionable work, a democratic state should not arrest and imprison someone who has only expressed his vision, no matter how provocative. Intimidating people in such a way is the kind of repressive, censoring gesture that belongs to a dictatorship.

Ritalin

For my regular Swiss gig, Weltwoche Magazine, I did this witty illo accompanying a rather dry, technical article on Ritalin. The drug prescribed to pacify over-active children. My own kid, Clovis, is two months old today and sleeping peacefully as I write this entry. Hopefully I won't be needing any Ritalin to pacify him in the near future...

Networkless

My first isometric pixel illustration for a magazine.

It's very nice to be back in the world of pixels. The purity of pixels has always had a special magical attraction to me, from the days I was playing Pong on a television in my early childhood.

Later I became a pixel artist for commercial 2D computer games in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Hierarchy

Before I was a 3D guy I was a pixel artist for commercial 2D games, from the late 80s to the late 90s. Now I'd like to return to my roots (without leaving 3D of course).

Here's an illustration I made to get into pixeling again. I tried to keep it as minimalistic as possible, in search of the ultimate essence in conveying a visual message.

Girls galore

Hey. It's been awhiles since my last post. I have a baby son (seven weeks now) and it's taking up a lot of my time. I'm only now slowly getting back to work. Here's two illo's I did for a clockface (Lou Lou posted one here some time ago also). The first one they didn't like, so I will use that one for something else. The second one they did like, so that's the one that'll see print.

Dutch fans of Americana music. I wouldn't want to embarrass any Clogwork guys, so I'll keep my opinions on my own blog this time. And before you ask, it is Johnny Cash's dog.
