Left virus: "Hey man, I thought you were going to the Netherlands?!"

Right virus: "Yeah ... didn't make it beyond the immigration service!"

The Dutch immigration service has become notorious for their intolerance.

I know I'm not the only pencil that is asked by too many too often to do something for free. The other day once again I decided to stop saying 'Yes" and start saying 'No' to non-paying assignments. Time to earn!
The very next day I was asked by that great rock & roll-duo 'Sixtyniners' ( consisting of artists Michiel 'Ugly Mean Chickie' Hoving - www.hoving.com/sixtyniners/highway.html - and Claudia Hek - www.claudiahek.net )to make them a CD-cover. The only problem: money was tight. Could we maybe swap art?
We did, as you can see. Decisions schmecisions!

This is the french version, but my warm wishes are global.

The Monarch Matador

Again I was asked to do a cover for anti-monarchist magazine ' De Republikein', this time about the consequences a united Europe will have for the crowns on the assorted royal heads, and for their so-called subjects.
Europe, in Greek mythology, was abducted by Zeus in the shape of a bull. ( 'Signal' , the 'Newsweek' of the nazi's, used her and her kidnapping beast as a logo, by the way.)
In my first sketch the king was deemed too positive, too powerful, 'his' people too weak.
The final image is more true to the facts: out of fear of change and loss of independence the people cling to 'their' monarch, not necessarily out of love for the monarchy.

Rain Song

In the first version the little foxy lady had a bright red foxtail, which gave my (mainly male) colleagues on my favorite forum lots of disgusting associations.
But in Illustrator such details are so easy to change, so this is the third and final version.
Oh yes, the text is rough text, which will be embellished by the editor of "Graphic Classics".

Dr. Phil

Finally I was drawing someone my friends in the dog park could relate to. It made for a fine subject while slipping and sliding on the ice. And I wasn't even the most elitist dog owner, one woman actually hadn't even ever heard of Dr. Phil. A doctor herself mind you. Which is pretty comforting when you think about it. Now I will stop thinking about Dr. Phil the moment he turns into fish wrapping paper. I don't know, I always get into these imaginary relationships with the people I have to draw, I can't help it. Like with Dr. Phil, jesus. I keep thinking of things in my life that I would have him talk about in his show. That is too creepy to even ask you guys what you would have Dr. Phil talk about regarding your lives. I have way more shit happening than I thought, I could fill (Phil) ten shows. Easy.

Relax

Novels. Novels bore me to death. Always have and probably always will. As a kid I used to read in the big art books we had at home. They were full of wonderful images and amazing stories. Stories about how Géricault kept rotting horses heads under his bed. Stories about van Gogh cutting his ear. Stories about how Lautrec had a custom walking stick made in order to be able to hide booze in it. I couldn't get enough of those stories and I couldn't wait to grow up and become a tortured, neurotic artist myself. I became an illustrator-with-a-communication-disorder instead.
Close enough.

Born near Paris and living nearly twenty years in Amsterdam, I'm a vector addict. In fact: Pierre Bézier is my hero. Furthuremore I'm in love with my drawing tablet, an ageing Wacom Intuos A3 (but that's ok, I'm not getting younger either). That it then. Cheers.

About women who after decades of marriage, come out as lesbians. I found this a tough one to tackle without coming across homophobic or too stereotype. I could have drawn a woman changing an apron for a pair of dungarees, but I have way too many gay friends and relatives, they would have given me hell.

On the illustrator's mailing list a discussion is going on about changes. And I just did one this morning, so I'll generate some traffic here. This client always asks for changes, it is like a matter of principal to them. This time the hairdo was "tuttig". I agree, but I have to confess it was a little on purpose.

for a newspaper article about bureaucracy in the european union. While working on it I tried to mime some features of silkscreen printing. I used two layers of color, the overlap being the darkest color. (the dark & white smoke I put in later)

working without getting paid (in a normal way)

Illustration for an article about new ways of getting paid for freelance work. No normal invoices (factuur) anymore, the constituent decides what he thinks your work is worthed.
This may sound strange, but it gives the freelancer more freedom to come up with new ideas. And in the end the payment needn't to be less. In fact it is often better.

wiet!

I have been illustrating softdrugs-related publications for some years now. I haven't, however, touched a single spliff all those years; too much paranoïa! This one is # 5 in a series about famous Dutch people being stoned, following a series of stoned pin-ups and one about stoned superheroes, all of them published in the dutch marijuana-promoting glossy High Life.

de harmheid

This drawing, based on the 2 tone characters used by the Specials and the Beat, was made for Harm, singer of the dutch ska/rock outfit De Hardheid. He gave me the old and rare nederpunk compilation-album 'Als je haar maar goed zit', featuring classic bands such as A4, Frites Modern, Amsterdamned and the Nitwitz, and I made him this one.

As Miss Duvekot already pointed out, this weekend she and me are back to back ( 96, if you pardon me this tasteless pun) in NRC-Handelsblad, 'the mind's grindstone' as the paper calls itself. ( The 'Ghost's Grindstone' sounds better but I'm not sure they're talking phantoms here.)

I was asked to illustrate an interview with professor Weizenbaum, who left Germany in the 30's with his furrier-parents, stood at the cradle of computers at MIT (U.S.A.), denounces now both MIT for working with the Pentagon and his own invention of digital psycho-therapy, hates Bush, returned to Berlin to live opposite the Berlin Dom, doesn't believe his grandchildren will die a natural death, says: 'Who only has a hammer sees the whole world as a nail' and hopes to celebrate his 85th birthday soon, in spite of his doctor's alarming opinion...
When the journalist left he said: 'Wish me a happy landing' and added with a big smile that everything he'd told him had been a lie.
