Every year I make a holiday T-shirt for my sons, Sweden again this year, trolls 'n' moose, printed in dark blue on a blue shirt. In 2006 it was pipi, karlsson and mr. nilsson, printed in blue on a yellow shirt (Sweden!), but that turned out rather greenish...

all good things come to an end

This is my very last author drawing for the newspaper, sadly enough. I was supposed to have done them one year, 2006, ended up doing them well into 2007, but now I am really done, and Peter van Dongen will take over. My dear husband was kind enough to make me a website with the collected author drawings. The NRC will publish the URL with this last one, on August 31st. I hope I will sell some prints to the NRC readership. For now, you can tell me which of my drawings is your favourite, I'd like that. Please don't tell me your least favourite ones, I am a sensitive soul. I myself, I am most happy with Willem Brakman, Elsbeth Etty, Eva Gerlach, and Ramsey Nasr.

Dutch politician Geert Wilders dominates de debate about the issue of muslim integration in the dutch society. He dominates it for example by comparing the Koran to Mein Kampf.

Hope sometimes delays a lot

I was asked by an enterprising utopian to do ( for free) a little ( A -4-ish) painting , depicting 'hope' so he could hang it ( using Velcro), together with lots of likewise paintings by other artists, on the sides of his truck for people all over Europe to see. Thus promoting hope... Unable to say 'No' most of the time to requests like these I promised to think of something.
Around the same time a little painting -on a little easel- was sent to me in the mail by my friend (and Amsterdam spray-can-artist) ' Laser 3.14' showing one of the 1-liners he leaves on so many walls and fences around town.
It took some time before I realised for the 'hope'-project I could paint this mini-painting sitting on my dusty piano, amongst trinkets, statuettes , heron-skull , Daaibooibaai-beach-souvenirs from Curacao, etc...
And , as you can see, I did.

Alfa Romeo Spider

I did this illo as a test for Swiss weekly Die Weltwoche. They have a weekly car column, which they wanted me to illustrate. Quite a tall order, but the promised pay sounded pretty good, and the gig was basically a free assignment. Anyway, the art director asked me to do one test-illustration, which turned out quite nicely, I don't mind saying.
Today, however, the editorial staff decided to use photography from now on because of budgetary reasons. I was a bit depressed... maybe I can use this illo for some other purpose...

Daily cartoon for the Dutch Nu.nl news website, about a survey which concluded that about half of the world population owns a mobile telephone.

In the cartoon the African native irritatedly calls her husband to ask how much longer it will take him to bring back his prey, because her bouillon is already boiling.

Nice little job that came along: a 45 rpm record sleeve for Rotterdam's garage rockers the Quotes, with a bit of Doug Stanhope stand-up comedy on the flip side. Strange combo, indeed... These are the perks of being an illustrator as far as I'm concerned.

Last week I did this coverillustration for a nrc.next article about helpdesks and customers and how to improve their relation.
I felt the deep urge to draw an angry person. RAAAH!

Ironing Bored

Hi-heeled speed-queen Miss Pigeoncot's latest entry, the housewife with the ironing-board, somehow rang a bell.
Then it dawned on me. I once did a similar ironing scene for 'Mainline', a Dutch subsidized magazine (for some 20 years already) hopelessly dedicated to informing junkies of the hazards of their habit and supplying the dopies with all the news that's vital to their well-being, where to get the best tin-foil, etc.
I was asked to illustrate this gag-page ( haha!) written by a heroin-hooker from Amsterdam, calling her sisters to leave the potato-couch, wash rubbers, iron tin-foils, sharpen syringes, test new drugs on 'john's' and feed your (useless junkiepimp-)partner to your pets when all else fails... (Not hard to understand when you read the diary the poor girl keeps in the same magazine!)

Shield-shape #3

By now it will be obvious that I'm a sucker for the shield shape. Here is my third contribution in that shape: a CD inlay/cover for Relax, a Dutch hiphop(hippop?)-outfit. Done with coloured paper-cut-outs, a favourite technique of mine. You might call it 'Flintstone-photoshopping' with glue and scissors.

Great article. Ellen says the catwalk course improved her mood. The article improved mine, I almost feel like taking a course myself. Although I'm pretty good at walking on high heels already, or at least I used to be. I hardly ever wear high heels anymore. Back in my art school days I used to buy wild second hand pairs. Stiletto's were obligatory around 1980. I spent my best high heels day ever shopping all day in Amsterdam, on speed. Swear to god, it was the only time in my whole life that I have ever taken speed. But speed and high heels go together very well, I can tell you that. Otherwise I am very clean, I haven't even had a drop of alcohol in weeks. Went to Betty's this week, ordered a soda water.
