Banjo Double

The briefing for this VPRO TV guide cover illustration was simple: "We want you to draw something incorporating books and music".
This picture is what I came up with. It Illustrates the recently held Crossing Border Festival in the Hague, a festival that explores the boundaries between literature and music. So there you go..

Medusa

Somehow, when my mind starts to wander, and I spend my days idly doodling, I somehow always end up drawing pretty girls or monsters... or an amalgam of the two subjects...
Medusa the Gorgon, from Greek mythology, of old has held a special place in my imagination. Has something to do with that hair...

Gids 22

Me and Eliane share the same client. I just did this editorial piece for the VPRO Gids #22, illustrating an article on a new Discovery Channel show entitled 'Dirty Jobs' about people with ...dirty jobs.

Ritalin

For my regular Swiss gig, Weltwoche Magazine, I did this witty illo accompanying a rather dry, technical article on Ritalin. The drug prescribed to pacify over-active children. My own kid, Clovis, is two months old today and sleeping peacefully as I write this entry. Hopefully I won't be needing any Ritalin to pacify him in the near future...

Girls galore

Hey. It's been awhiles since my last post. I have a baby son (seven weeks now) and it's taking up a lot of my time. I'm only now slowly getting back to work. Here's two illo's I did for a clockface (Lou Lou posted one here some time ago also). The first one they didn't like, so I will use that one for something else. The second one they did like, so that's the one that'll see print.

Saint Obama

This faux stained-glass portrait of Barack Obama was comissioned by the Volkskrant. I kinda liked the way it turned out and thought I'd share it with you guys.

MONSTA?

Haven't posted here in a while. Here's some monster heads I've been working on recently.
Will come back and post more stuff soon.

Alfa Romeo Spider

I did this illo as a test for Swiss weekly Die Weltwoche. They have a weekly car column, which they wanted me to illustrate. Quite a tall order, but the promised pay sounded pretty good, and the gig was basically a free assignment. Anyway, the art director asked me to do one test-illustration, which turned out quite nicely, I don't mind saying.
Today, however, the editorial staff decided to use photography from now on because of budgetary reasons. I was a bit depressed... maybe I can use this illo for some other purpose...

7"

Nice little job that came along: a 45 rpm record sleeve for Rotterdam's garage rockers the Quotes, with a bit of Doug Stanhope stand-up comedy on the flip side. Strange combo, indeed... These are the perks of being an illustrator as far as I'm concerned.

Boris

Bought a batch of scraperboard last year. I have recently re-discovered the medium. I find it especially useful for photographic effect like these. Nice to practice once in a while.

Rails

The NS (Dutch Railways) have an on-board freebie magazine called "Rails." I just finished two illustrations for it, accompanying a rather sappy, romantic short story called "Return to Abbey Road". I tried experimenting a bit, differing the color schemes I would normally use. I kinda like the way they turned out....

Wedding invitation

Whenever I find myself at a lull (my favorite word in english. Ask anyone who speaks dutch to explain) professionally, I tend to oblige fans and admirers of my work in doing them a favor. In this case these two are getting married and wanted me to draw them an invitation. The guy's surname is "Kohnen", so it inspired me to make them this piece.

T99

Friends of mine play in a cool band. For their new CD they wanted me to do the cover art. Naturally I was happy to oblige ...

Zombie Rebs

I did a doodle in my sketchbook featuring these three confederate zombie musicians. A friend of mine happened to come across this sketch while he was leafing through my sketchbook. He immediately fell in love with the drawing, saying: "if you're ever going to work out this sketch as a proper drawing, I'll buy it off you!" And guess what; so I did.

Creek Speaks

Schokkend Nieuws (Shocking News) is a magazine here in Holland, solely devoted to genre-cinema. It is a mag made for and by movie lovers. I've been a steady contributor for the past six years or so, doing a topical illustrated page, together with Bart van der Put, a film critic. In this installment we decided to spoof all those 'making of's' you see nowadays on DVD extra's and what not.

Meat & Potatoes

As a free-lance illustrator I do a lot of work like this, for all kinds of sponsored magazines and such. in fact, it is my meat and potatoes. A lot of this work never makes it to my portfolio, not because it's bad, but because the subject matter is ofttimes a bit bland (to put it mildly) The briefings for these illustrations are usually very tight and don't leave a lot of room for interpretation. I like doing it though, it really makes me draw stuff I wouldn't normally draw. Oh yeah, and did I mention it pays well?

Ah what the heck...

Here's another picture I've made this week, a CD sleeve for a DJ from Germany. Not my cup of tea music-wise, but hey, if some dude pays me to draw him a robot, I ain't the one to complain...

It's the Creekster!

Hi y'all. Let's see If I'll remember to contribute some news to this blog once in while. This picture is a flyer for an upcoming exhibition I'm curating. it's going to be held in the ABC treehouse gallery in Amsterdam, this coming april.
Cheers for now.
