Weird Worm

Thought I'd show you some examples from the weird and annoying things that can happen to an illustrator.

Case #1 is very awkward.
In 1990 I made a cover for a fantasy-book. This book was not only sold in bookstores but also through a 'bookclub'. This club - ECI- has a sale-catalogue and 'The Worm Ourobouros' , as the book was called, was advertized in it.
A not too close inspection already reveals the strange thing that happened.
It's true that the 'necklace' was made seperate from the 'face' but I had it glued, and what could be the explanation for the absurd fact that the 'face' had shifted sideways ?
You think I'm silly for getting somewhat paranoid at the time ?

Sellotape is called "Scotch" here in France. This is another experiment to do Duck covers without the heavily inked outlines.

The Past & The Patience

Two years ago I was asked to contribute a 4-page-comic-story to a big book about drugs. I made a story about my earlier experiences with what American officials awkwardly call 'substance-abuse' , titled ' Drugsverledenman' - meaning 'Drugs-past-man'.
The pay was decent and undelayed, the publication of the book was not. I'm still waiting for it to appear in the bookstores. (The writer of the book is known for his substance-craving , which might explain it. Still it is frustrating as hell ).
Hence this little preview here.

Uncle Abdul

This satirical suicide bomber character from the Seamour Sheep comic strip series will soon be available as a designer vinyl figure, produced by Crazy Label. We hope that the release of the Uncle Abdul figure will help to ironize the act of killing.

The photograph shows the first hand-painted Uncle Abdul toy prototype being greeted by the very rare red-nosed edition of Marty Mole.

vakantiewerk

Every year I make a holiday T-shirt for my sons, Sweden again this year, trolls 'n' moose, printed in dark blue on a blue shirt. In 2006 it was pipi, karlsson and mr. nilsson, printed in blue on a yellow shirt (Sweden!), but that turned out rather greenish...

all good things come to an end

This is my very last author drawing for the newspaper, sadly enough. I was supposed to have done them one year, 2006, ended up doing them well into 2007, but now I am really done, and Peter van Dongen will take over. My dear husband was kind enough to make me a website with the collected author drawings. The NRC will publish the URL with this last one, on August 31st. I hope I will sell some prints to the NRC readership. For now, you can tell me which of my drawings is your favourite, I'd like that. Please don't tell me your least favourite ones, I am a sensitive soul. I myself, I am most happy with Willem Brakman, Elsbeth Etty, Eva Gerlach, and Ramsey Nasr.

Hope sometimes delays a lot

I was asked by an enterprising utopian to do ( for free) a little ( A -4-ish) painting , depicting 'hope' so he could hang it ( using Velcro), together with lots of likewise paintings by other artists, on the sides of his truck for people all over Europe to see. Thus promoting hope... Unable to say 'No' most of the time to requests like these I promised to think of something.
Around the same time a little painting -on a little easel- was sent to me in the mail by my friend (and Amsterdam spray-can-artist) ' Laser 3.14' showing one of the 1-liners he leaves on so many walls and fences around town.
It took some time before I realised for the 'hope'-project I could paint this mini-painting sitting on my dusty piano, amongst trinkets, statuettes , heron-skull , Daaibooibaai-beach-souvenirs from Curacao, etc...
And , as you can see, I did.

Alfa Romeo Spider

I did this illo as a test for Swiss weekly Die Weltwoche. They have a weekly car column, which they wanted me to illustrate. Quite a tall order, but the promised pay sounded pretty good, and the gig was basically a free assignment. Anyway, the art director asked me to do one test-illustration, which turned out quite nicely, I don't mind saying.
Today, however, the editorial staff decided to use photography from now on because of budgetary reasons. I was a bit depressed... maybe I can use this illo for some other purpose...
